AEO vs SEO: what is the difference?
SEO (search engine optimization) earns your page a position in Google's list of links. AEO (answer engine optimization) earns your content the answer that ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI give when someone asks a question. SEO is about being found; AEO is about being the answer. A small business needs both, and the work overlaps more than the acronyms suggest.

AEO vs SEO in one table
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A position in the list of links | Your content quoted as the answer |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results pages | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Bing Copilot |
| Typical query | "bookkeeper for tradies" | "which bookkeeper should a tradie use and what does it cost?" |
| Unit of content | The page | The passage under a question heading |
| On-page work | Titles, meta descriptions, internal links, speed, indexing | Question headings, a direct answer in the first 60 words, FAQPage and Organization schema, consistent facts |
| Off-page work | Backlinks | Mentions and citations on sources the models read: directories, reviews, Reddit, YouTube, industry roundups |
| How it is measured | Rankings, impressions, clicks | Citation rate: how often the engines name you when asked |
| Time to first result | Weeks for existing pages, months for new ones | Four to eight weeks in Google AI Overviews, two to three months in ChatGPT and Perplexity |
The right-hand column is not a replacement for the left. AI engines still read the pages Google indexes, so a slow, unindexed or thin site fails at both. AEO adds a layer on top: the structure and the third-party proof that make a model confident enough to quote you.
What SEO does that AEO does not
- ✓Earns clicks from people who still scan a results page, which for many commercial searches is most of them.
- ✓Gets the page indexed and crawlable in the first place. Nothing gets cited if it is not in the index.
- ✓Builds the backlink profile that both Google and the AI engines treat as a trust signal.
What AEO does that SEO does not
- ✓Targets the question, not the keyword. "How much does a bookkeeper cost for a tradie" is the unit, and the page has to answer it in the first paragraph.
- ✓Makes your facts consistent everywhere the models read: your site, your directory listings, your reviews. A model will not name a business whose price or location differs from source to source.
- ✓Measures success by whether the engines name you, not by a position number. A page can rank fourth on Google and be the only source Perplexity cites, or rank first and never be quoted.
Where does GEO fit? SEO vs AEO vs GEO
GEO (generative engine optimization) is the broader cousin of AEO. AEO gets a specific passage quoted as the answer to a specific question. GEO gets your brand recommended when an AI composes a wider answer, such as "who is a good bookkeeper for tradies". GEO leans on entity signals: your Organization schema, your About page, your presence on directories and review sites, and how consistently the web describes you. Most small businesses treat AEO and GEO as one job. The AEO vs GEO page goes through the differences in detail.
What should a small business do first?
- ✓Fix the SEO basics once. Indexing, titles, speed, internal links. This is a one-off clean-up, then a weekly check.
- ✓Pick five buyer questions. The ones where a customer would act on the answer. Check whether the engines name you today. Most small businesses start at zero.
- ✓Answer each one on a page of its own. The question as the heading, the answer in the first 60 words, a price or a comparison where you can state one, FAQ schema underneath.
- ✓Make the facts match off-site. Directory listings, reviews, a LinkedIn company page and community answers that describe you the same way your site does.
- ✓Re-check monthly. Keep the questions that move, swap the ones that do not.
