How Local Businesses Can Show Up in AI Search Results (Not Just Google Maps)

23 May 20266 min read

Local SEO gets you visible on Google Maps and in "near me" searches. Local AI visibility gets you named when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a recommendation in your area. These two goals share some signals but require meaningfully different strategies. A business that has dominated local SEO for years can still be invisible in AI search, because AI tools weight different sources and prioritise different signals for local recommendations.

Why Local SEO and Local AI Visibility Are Not the Same

Google Maps rankings are driven by proximity, Google Business Profile completeness, review velocity, and local relevance signals. AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity care about many of the same fundamentals but weight them differently and draw on a broader source pool.

In particular, AI tools weight:

  • Mentions in local media: a reference in a local news site, suburb blog, or regional business journal signals that your business exists in a specific place and has some community presence
  • Multi-platform review presence: reviews across two or more platforms (not just Google) tell AI tools your business has enough real activity to be worth citing
  • Structured directory listings: listings on authoritative platforms with consistent name, address, and phone number data
  • Clear entity information on your website: your suburb, service area, and the specific services you offer, stated in plain language and machine-readable format

Five Local-Specific Actions to Improve AI Visibility

1. Get Listed on Yelp and Other Review Aggregators

Yelp is one of the most consistently cited sources when ChatGPT and Perplexity recommend local businesses. If you are not listed, that is a straightforward gap. Claim your listing (it is free), complete every field including business description, category, services, and hours, and start requesting reviews from satisfied clients.

Depending on your business type, other relevant platforms might include TripAdvisor (hospitality, tourism), Healthgrades or RateMDs (health services), Houzz (home services), or Avvo (legal). At least two active review aggregators with recent reviews is the local AI visibility baseline.

2. Earn a Local Press Mention

A single mention in a local newspaper, suburb blog, regional business journal, or community news site is one of the most effective local AI visibility signals you can build. It does not need to be a feature story. It can be a quote in an article about your industry, a mention in a "local businesses to know" round-up, or a submission to the business section of a local publication.

To pursue this: identify two or three local publications that cover businesses in your area, look at the types of stories they publish, and pitch a simple angle (a new service, a local initiative, a seasonal tip). A 50-word mention with your business name and suburb is genuinely useful.

3. Write a Clear About Page That States Your Location and Services Explicitly

Your website needs to state, in plain text (not just in a contact form or footer), exactly where you operate and what services you offer. AI tools need to read this information directly from your page content.

A physiotherapy clinic might write: "We are a physiotherapy clinic in Newtown, Sydney, serving the Inner West. We treat sports injuries, post-operative rehabilitation, and chronic pain conditions. We see clients from Newtown, Enmore, Marrickville, and surrounding suburbs."

That paragraph is local AI visibility gold. It gives AI tools everything they need to cite you accurately for local queries: location, service type, and catchment area.

4. Get Reviews on Multiple Platforms, Not Just Google

Google reviews are the most visible, but AI tools draw on multiple review platforms. A business with 50 Google reviews and zero reviews anywhere else has a weaker multi-platform signal than a business with 30 Google reviews, 15 Yelp reviews, and 10 on a sector-specific aggregator.

After your next service or sale, ask the customer for a review and give them the choice of platform. Some clients prefer Google, others prefer Yelp. Both contributions help. Rotate the ask over time to build presence across multiple platforms rather than concentrating all reviews on one.

5. Complete and Regularise Your Chamber of Commerce or Industry Association Listing

Chamber of commerce websites and professional association directories are high-authority sources that AI tools treat as credible verification of your local business presence. Many businesses join but never complete their directory profile.

Log into your chamber or association member portal and verify that your listing includes: full business name (matching your website and Google Business Profile exactly), current description of your services, your suburb and service area, your website URL, and your phone number. A complete, consistent listing on a credible third-party directory is one of the strongest local AI citation signals available to most small businesses.

The Local AI Visibility Baseline

A local business with the five actions above completed has a meaningfully stronger AI visibility signal than the vast majority of local businesses right now. The category is early enough that these basics, executed consistently, are sufficient to appear in AI recommendations for a significant share of local queries in most sectors.
